The Blues had just one goal on the board at three-quarter-time but lifted a little to slot three last term majors. However, the bottom line was a 42-point loss to superior rivals.
The ability of the Numurkah defence to shut down the Tongala forward line told the story of the game.
Tongala’s forwards couldn’t buy a goal anywhere although given plenty of chances.
Hamish Cohen and boom recruit Cameron Illett worked hard to try and get some spark into the Tongala side without much support.
Former Kyabram players Kyle Fitzgerald and Coby McCarthy were among the Blues’ best again after impressive debuts the previous week.
Jake Hammond and Luke Woolan also showed out at times but it was a disappointing effort from a side that more was expected from.
The Blues have another tough rival, reigning premier Nathalia, to meet this Saturday and will need to lift measurably to be a chance to cause an upset.
■ TONGALA’S reserves had a big win, dominating from start to finish.
With eight goals between them Brad Power and Jesse Robilliard were able to do the finishing off work of Bailey Cox, Lachy Hipwell, Billy Warren and Tim Strapp to have scoreboard pressure on their rivals all day.
■ TONGALA’S under 17 side matched Numurkah for the first half but dropped off the intensity after half-time to lose touch.
Mackenzie Cowley was the Blues standout and he received great support from Ryan Hatch, Jay Matthes and Max Watson.
Blake O’Hara and Clayton Watson also put in solid games for Tongala.
■ EXCITING young talent Harley Reid’s 13 goal haul was the highlight of a 138-point win enjoyed by the Tongala Under 14s.
But Harley had plenty of support, particularly from Tristan Watson, Luke Carroll and Kade Northausen.
Bailey Marsh and James Coulson also stepped up in the impressive win.
