The number of entries was up on last year and a new veterans’ doubles competition was embraced by participants.
Two of the club’s most loved faces were surprised with life memberships at the conclusion of play on Saturday – one for Mark Schumann, and one for Barry Norton.
President Mel Kelsey did the honours in presenting the memberships and thanked both men for their extraordinary contributions to tennis in Kyabram.
“The club has lent on Barry and Mark for over 30 years. Between them, they have been president or vice president of our club for the last 19 years.
“Both men are still playing competition and Barry won club champion last year at the age of 60.
“They have both contributed a tremendous amount and have led the way forward in regards to the amazing clubhouse we have today. They are outstanding mentors to our up and coming juniors over the years and now.
“Barry and Mark are a great example of what a good club person is and their impact on the club and community has been exceptional,” she said.
Both Barry and Mark’s respective children and many of their extended families were there to witness the announcement.
This year the Kyabram Lawn Tennis Club cut a cake to celebrate what they believed to be was the first Easter Tournament in Kyabram, albeit before the club was incorporated.
“While there may have been earlier tournaments, we believe that 1919 was the first time the then Kyabram Tennis Club held an Easter tournament in their own right,” Mel Kelsey said.
“There have been recesses since then, notably World War II, but we are thrilled to think our Easter tradition began at least 100 years ago,” she said.
