A bra a day is helping keep cancer away

IT’S ALMOST impossible not to notice the colourful array of brassieres hanging from an ordinary steel post and wire fence as you drive along the straight stretch of Cobb Hwy through Mathoura.

Sharnie Celli got the idea to create a bra fence after watching the TV show Travel Guides, where a town in New Zealand raised $30,000 doing the same thing.

Mrs Celli’s fence tribute fundraiser is in memory of her friend Wendy Nikolovski, who died of brain cancer in November.

Wendy’s daughter Ebony Nikolovski (pictured) was given the honour of hanging the first tribute — her mum’s pink bra — about two months ago and now there are almost 180 alongside it.

They’ve also raised close to $1000 for cancer services through donations.

‘‘We collect the money every afternoon (from the donation box) and it’s such a joy that we find donations there every time,’’ Mrs Celli said. ‘‘The money will all be going towards locals and local organisations, including the Echuca and Deniliquin hospitals, as well as fuel vouchers for those who travel back and forth for cancer treatment.’’

To keep up the momentum, Mrs Celli encourages people to ‘‘spread the word’’ about the bra fence, which borders the front of Jamie and Anne Robertson’s Mathoura property.

‘‘Keep liking and sharing our posts and following our Facebook. If you have an old bra put it on our fence, leave a donation and take a photo and share it on our page. Together we’ll fight this terrible disease.’’

The fence has even caught the attention of current affairs program Landline when ABC staff were passing through Mathoura.

‘‘We’ve also had a lot of ladies message from all over Australia who are sending their bras down to us to hang, some from as far away as Mount Gambier,’’ Mrs Celli said. ‘‘Two ladies even pulled up while I was at the fence and ripped off their bras they were wearing to hang them.’’

Mrs Celli said the goal was to fill the fence with bras.

‘‘It’s quite a long one, but if we keep seeing the support we have so far, it shouldn’t be a hard goal to reach.’’

There is a donation box next to the sign and pegs to hang your bra.

‘‘Thanks to everyone who donated and Greg Chandler for the amazing sign.’’
