But all for a good cause, when Moama 13-year-old Tess Harvey recently chopped off her locks for Variety’s Hair with Heart.
A whopping 35.5cm of her blonde tresses will be made into a wig for children who have lost their hair due to an illness.
Tess also made hair scrunchies and bookmarks, selling them to family and friends with the goal of raising an additional $500 for the children’s charity.
Which she’s already smashed, raising a massive $1437 to date.
Mum Nat Harvey said Tess first had the idea to cut her hair after she was inspired by brave little local Ivy-Jean Phipps, who is currently fighting leukaemia.
‘‘We know Ivy’s uncle Ash Phipps through touch footy and hockey,’’ Nat said.
‘‘Tess originally wanted to make a wig for Ivy. When I told her that wasn’t really possible, that the hair would be distributed by Hair with Heart, she decided she still wanted to help out.
‘‘She did the research herself and, with a bit of help, made lots of scrunchies and bookmarks and sold hundreds.’’
On New Year’s Day, local hairdresser Leah Alberni travelled out to where Tess’ family and friends were camping for their holiday break in Benarca Forest, Moama.
And a small crowd gathered to witness Tess’ haircut, everyone wearing red, the colour of Variety Children’s Charity.
And while the new ‘do was perfect for the blistering summer heat, Tess wasn’t sold right away.
‘‘She hated it at first, it was a bit of a shock,’’ Nat said.
‘‘But she loves it now.
‘‘I’m so proud of her for doing this, especially as she came up with the idea all by herself.’’
