Alan and mate Jody Haberfield will embark on the 3614km journey — via Birdsville — in October as part of the Shitbox Rally.
And they couldn’t have picked a better car to do it in.
It’s a 1986 Holden Camira.
‘‘It’s Australia’s ultimate shitbox,’’ Alan said.
‘‘It goes but it needs a few things done to it to make it roadworthy.’’
It’s all in the name of charity, with more than $17 million in funds raised over the past 10 years going to the Cancer Council.
‘‘I’ve had family and friends affected by cancer so this is a great way to raise money for cancer research,’’ Alan said.
‘‘We need to raise a minimum of $5000.’’
Their team, named Municipal Misfits — on account of Alan being an engineer with Echuca Paddlesteamers and Jody a ranger with East Gippsland Shire — will join 550 other participants and cars worth less than $1000 on the seven-day journey from October 19-26.
Alan is no stranger to the event — doing the 3000km trip from Mackay to Hobart in 2016 and raising about $7000 in the process.
He hopes to do the same this year.
With $1785 in the bank so far, Alan hopes a trivia night later this month will edge him closer to their target.
‘‘We’re also looking for local businesses to sponsor us,’’ he said.
The trivia night will be held at 7pm on July 20 at the Falcon Hotel.
Tickets for teams of 10 cost $150, which includes lucky door prizes, competitions and nibbles.
A courtesy bus is available. To book, phone the hotel on 58592304 or email kanyapellamarket@gmail.com
