AN ECHUCA man who punched another man in the face because he was jealous the man was out with a girl he fancied will be barred from licenced premises for six months.
Ricki Waters, 25, attended Echuca Magistrates Court on Wednesday, pleading guilty to recklessly causing injury.
Police prosecutor Acting Sergeant Sally Mannell said the attack took place at a local bar on February 16, 2018.
‘‘The victim was sitting on a lounge at 1.45am talking to a female also known to the accused,’’ she said.
‘‘Mr Waters walked up behind the victim and pushed him on the shoulder. When the victim stood up and confronted him, the accused punched him in the face.
‘‘The victim was later assessed for injuries to the ear and cheek. He eventually attended the local police station and reported the assault.’’
Mr Waters was interviewed and said he punched the victim because ‘‘he was giving me the sh**s, trying to show off getting with the girl I was interested in’’.
Defence lawyer Kate Freshwater said her client had committed similar offences in the past and acknowledged he had a problem with alcohol.
Magistrate John Bentley barred Mr Waters from any licenced premises for six months and placed him on a 15-month community corrections order including 150 hours community work and assessment and treatment for alcohol, mental health and reoffending issues.
