ECHUCA police are investigating a ram raid at Intersport Bennett’s at 3.50am on Wednesday, December 5.
A vehicle was rammed into the front door of the shop, wrecking the front section and damaging the security system.
The offenders escaped with a quantity of sports clothing and shoes, with the total value yet to be verified.
Store owner Rowan Bennett said he was devastated to wake up to find his shop had been raided.
“Thankfully they didn’t take too much. The alarm probably started going off and the security guard would have made it there in two minutes, so they didn’t get a lot before they cleared out,” he said.
“But I’m frustrated. I know these raids have been happening around town and in Rochester and Kyabram – it’s just the world we live in, it seems.
“But we’ve been lucky enough to escape it so far, we’ve only really been targeted by shoplifters, but not this.
“I guess it was just our turn. So I really sympathise with all the other businesses across town who have experienced this.”
Mr Bennett said the few items of clothing the crooks stole were fitted with new security tags that needed to be removed by a special electronic device.
“So it’s a bit frustrating, because they’ve run off with some very expensive tags. And when they try to remove them, they’ll only damage the garments,” he said.
He added there were plans to update the store’s security system to combat future break-ins.
“Sadly our security cameras didn’t really work, it was too dark, so now we’re looking to invest in infrared cams to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” he said.
The investigation is ongoing.
