A CRITICISM of Mayor Chris Bilkey sparked a clash between councillors at Murray River Council’s recent November ordinary meeting.
The dispute erupted during the sundry delegates report when Cr Gen Campbell questioned Cr Bilkey’s failure to inform councillors of two appointments he attended throughout the month.
These were a presentation to a Chinese agriculture delegation and a meeting with Campaspe mayor Adrian Weston and joint interview with the Riverine Herald.
But Cr Geoff Wise immediately slammed Cr Campbell’s comments.
‘‘Cr Bilkey is the head of the house and we gave him responsibility when we elected him,’’ he said. ‘‘And your constant emails undermining him annoy the hell out of me.’’
Cr Campbell said she appreciated Cr Wise’s frankness.
‘‘But whatever goes on in this council, we need to know about it,’’ she said.
‘‘Transparency and communication are key and when I was the acting mayor I got emails from people which showed I didn’t have a clue what was going on.’’
While he said comments could be ‘‘misconstrued’’ by the media, Cr Wise argued the mayor shouldn’t have to second-guess every word he said.
‘‘I don’t want to see what happened to the previous council happen again,’’ he said.
