CAMPASPE Shire has saved $24,500 in electricity bills after it installed 368 solar panels on the Echuca Regional Library in April last year.
That’s equivalent to 85 megawatt hours of energy or enough to use your computer for 738,839 hours.
Mayor Adrian Weston said the 100kW system would generate enough electricity for the library and when not in use, would offset the power of the Campaspe Shire main office, adjacent to it.
‘‘The project is reducing electricity costs as well as reducing council’s overall carbon footprint by cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions,’’ Cr Weston said. ‘‘It’s important that we contribute to a clean and green future, but the financial benefits are also there with the project expected to pay for itself in just over four years.’’
Following a competitive tender process, Cherry Solar Australia was selected, with local contractor, Solar On Electrical from Torrumbarry, engaged to install the system.
Council’s Green Team identified the library as a key site for its potential to generate enough electricity to power the library.
‘‘We are confident that the solar panels will last a minimum of 25 years and have gone to great lengths to ensure they are protected from bird damage,’’ Cr Weston said.
