In partnership with Campaspe Shire, EHS will relocate the remains of the bow section of the PS Murrumbidgee (pictured).
Currently, the bow section lies silt laden on the river bank near the wet dock below the Echuca Wharf.
In order to achieve this significant project EHS is looking for volunteers to help.
‘‘It is envisaged the wreck will be cleared of silt and cleaned off, stabilised for transportation to a covered storage and restoration location in preparation for conservation work,’’ EHS president Dot Hammond said.
‘‘On completion of conservation it is hoped the wreck will become a public display at a location yet to be decided.
‘‘Fit and active volunteers are needed for a rotating roster to help clear the silt which will be at the site at the southern end of the Echuca Wharf.’’
The project is expected to take approximately 15 days and will start in the first week of May, with initial excavation works.
Volunteers will need to be inducted with the Campaspe Shire council to ensure all OH&S and insurance requirements are met.
‘‘This is a rewarding opportunity to be part of an enthusiastic team of volunteers contributing to the conservation of an important vessel in the history of Echuca and Paddlesteamers,’’ Dot said.
Prospective volunteers need to view the wreck and the extent of the work before applying.
On March 26 there will be a public meeting for wannabe volunteers to discuss any aspect of the project, inspect the wreck and location and talk to EHS members and council officers at the Historical Society from 6pm.
