Police said it has been difficult to get all the details at this stage as the man has been so shaken and disoriented by the attack.
Constable M Gallop said they understand he was repeatedly kicked before he fell and badly struck his head on the ground.
He said the man had managed to stagger home where family members called police.
“After attending the scene the man was taken to Echuca hospital for treatment,” Const Gallop said.
“He is back home now and family members have told us the man is now resting,” he said.
“The attack happened between 10am and noon on Saturday and we believe it might have been in, or near, Pascoe St.
“The person we want to speak to is about 15 years old and was described as having dark blond, shoulder length hair. He was not wearing a shirt but did have black shorts and runners.”
At this stage it does not appear the man was robbed but police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the youth in the area – or the man walking.
They are asked to call Constable Gallop on 5483 1500 or file a report with Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
In other police news at the weekend there were a string of burglaries across the region.
A Campaspe Police Region CID spokesman said it started in Echuca’s industrial area between 11pm and 1am overnight Friday.
He said offenders cut a hole in a chain-link fence and stole a forklift, which they drove to an adjoining business in Dispatch St.
“They cut another hole in that fence and apparently used the forklift to get them onto the roof at that address,” the spokesman said.
“Nothing was stolen there but soon after another fence had a hole cut in it in Matong Rd and a ute and power tools were stolen,” he said.
“Soon after that another fence was cut and although nothing was stolen the offenders abandoned both the car and the power tools there.”
There was a fifth event, a store in Pakenham St was entered and again, nothing was stolen.
Police don’t consider it was related to the other break-ins.
At Rochester a person, or persons, used some sort of homemade weapon about 3am on Saturday to fire marbles through the windows of three businesses.
The CID spokesman said at one of the addresses the offenders broke in and stole soft drink and the cash tray from the till.
In Kyabram about 4.30am a small, dark sedan was seen at two addresses that were broken into.
The first was the town’s car wash where a vacuum machine was badly damaged as offenders jimmied it open looking for money.
“At the business in Union St the offenders also broke in after forcing the front door and stole the tray out of the cash register,” the spokesman said.
He said police want to hear from anyone who may have seen anything in any of the three towns.
They are confident the Rochester and Kyabram crimes are connected.
