Echuca Police Constable Lynden Goulding said it appeared the 62-year-old woman, who was driving a Mazda station wagon, suffered a medical incident before the crash.
Emergency services workers battled to help the woman while she was still in the car.
“The driver was travelling west on Anstruther St about 6.15pm when her car veered off the road,” Const. Goulding said.
“It ran over the footpath and into the fence,” he said.
“Unfortunately emergency services were unable to help the female driver and she was declared dead at the scene.”
Const. Goulding said there were no other vehicles involved and no-one else was injured in the accident.
A search and rescue unit, two ambulances, two CFA units and police attended the crash, with the centre of Echuca blocked for some time. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
