Today, that number has almost doubled to 30.
And the need is still growing.
But thanks to a $500 donation from Echuca Bendigo Bank, this vital community service will continue.
Held on a Monday night, the dinner provides a free meal for children in the area, as well as their families.
‘‘It’s also a great opportunity to connect kids with the community house and show them that it is a very safe place for them to go if needed,’’ Crossenvale Community House coordinator Sheridan Clark said.
‘‘We also have a youth engagement officer from the police attend to connect with kids in a positive way and build rapport with them.’’
New Life Baptist Church also provides hygiene packs for the children, as well as fruit for school lunches.
Ms Clark said the house was looking for more volunteers to help on Monday nights.
‘‘They just need to have a Working With Children Check. And if they don’t have one we are happy to help them apply,’’ she said.
‘‘We’re so thankful for this donation. We’re hoping for more donations in the future so we can buy a washing machine and dryer so the kids can come wash their clothes.’’
Echuca Bendigo Bank’s Ros Beriman said they were always on the lookout for local community groups in need.
‘‘We look at what’s around the community and approach not-for-profit groups to ask if they have something they’re looking to put funds towards,’’ she said. ‘‘We like to give back to the community and this is just one way we can do it.’’
