Ms O’Brien toured Echuca-Moama with the Riverine Herald, chatting to local stakeholders about the issues that affect them most. And from small business, tourism and manufacturing to health and disability services, local movers and shakers had a long wish list they hoped would be addressed in the Federal election.
But, unsurprisingly, water was largely at the heart of it.
“Water affects everyone and every facet of our industry,” Ms O’Brien said.
In the lead up to the election, Ms O’Brien said she had noticed an unprecedented level of disengagement among locals with the political process.
“A lot of people are feeling apathetic because of some of the behaviours we’ve seen at a Federal level that perhaps don’t reflect our personal values in terms of honesty and integrity,” she said.
Ms O’Brien encouraged locals to be informed and engaged before Saturday.
“Read widely, delve into the detail, have a look at the policy positions and utilise great online tools like Vote Compass so you know where you sit,” she said.
“And for those of you keen to chat to politicians face to face join us for a squash and throw a curly question their way.”
Pollies in the Pub, an election forum for the Farrer electorate, is on tonight at 5pm at The Border Inn.
