Nine players have put their hand up to play for the Echuca Master Blasters in a Twenty20 tournament that will include three games in four days.
After an undefeated campaign in the maiden Goulburn Murray Cricket senior women’s competition, the Bottle Greens are determined for more success.
‘‘Despite summer being over, we’re always hungry for more cricket,’’ Echuca representative Christy O’Brien said.
‘‘Any competition will only make us better players.
‘‘The passion all of the girls have for the game is unbelievable.
‘‘Being able to play cricket in that part of the world definitely ticks an item off my bucket list.’’
The competition remains very much an unknown for Echuca, given teams will travel from various parts of the globe.
‘‘We’re going there with an open mind because we don’t know what to expect,’’ O’Brien said.
‘‘There is certainly a few nerves, but we can only go there and do our best.’’
Teams are eligible to enter as many as 15 players into their side, but only 11 can bat.
Given Echuca has only nine registered players, people who have signed up as solo players will be added to the team — an opportunity which O’Brien is looking forward to.
‘‘We’re an open group who always welcomes new faces,’’ she said.
‘‘The main thing for us is to have a bit of fun and enjoy the time away from our daily lives.’’
Given the players will take time away from their everyday lives to participate at the event, they have needed plenty of support.
‘‘Our friends and family are really excited to see what we can achieve,’’ O’Brien said.
‘‘But the trip couldn’t have been possible without our sponsors Charles L King and Co First National, Xtreme Marine, Future NRG Maintenance, Patterson Finance, Pyramid Hill Welding Supplies and O’Brien Contracting.’’
Echuca will face off against Mareeba Dorys, Sharkies and Mulgrave, with the final set to be played on May 26.
