MEMBER for Murray Helen Dalton has called on the NSW education minister to urgently address a crisis in the NSW public school system she claims is caused by teacher shortages, poor planning and an under investment in school infrastructure and resources.

Mrs Dalton, formerly a school teacher, said she had made the education minister Sarah Mitchell aware of serious concerns with the schooling system, most notably in regional areas.
She raised the issue that school mergers in regional areas have been a disaster: “On any given day, up to 12 classes are not covered due to teacher shortages,” she said.
“Student absenteeism rates have skyrocketed. More than a third of the students have unacceptable attendance records. Parents and students are furious, and demanding action.’’
Mrs Dalton is calling for a halt to school mergers and an inquiry into both the implementation of the LMBR and the growing maintenance backlog in schools.
