MRC plans to drain away problems with water flow in and around Moama

MURRAY River Council has adopted its Moama Mid-West Drainage Strategy — a formalised whole-of-catchment plan aiming to remove many of the current issues associated with ad hoc draining design in Moama’s mid-west.

The area accounts for the urban growth zone of Cobb Highway west to 24 Lane and Perricoota Road north to the Rich River Golf Club.

MRC mayor Chris Bilkey said the provision of a formalised drainage strategy for the area was essential.

“As the land within the mid-west catchment is owned by several different landholders, several development applications have been received by council containing drainage designs specific to each individual development area,’’ he said.

Cr Bilkey said while these individual designs service the internal requirements of each of the sub-catchments, they do not enable the flow of water across the catchment, offer adequate storage of stormwater for major rain events or enable the disposal of captured stormwater to the Murray River. Council’s strategy creates a whole-of-catchment design that specifies the stormwater requirements for each sub-catchment, a flow path design between each sub-catchment and the ultimate disposal and reuse requirements for the entire Moama mid-west catchment. The strategy also details how the public open space and connecting pathway components within the catchment can be connected.

“This strategy will help eliminate existing development and drainage issues within the specified area and will enable connected planning for stormwater and public open space across the Moama mid-west,” Cr Bilkey added.

The Moama Mid-West Drainage Strategy will now be integrated into council’s strategic planning documents and internal DA assessment process via the various control plans and standards protocols.
