Best wishes and good luck to Cameron Keenan as he plays Victorian Under 18 Bowls against South Australia at Geelong on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.
Congratulations to club champion Ash Vesty as he played very well in the Champion of Champions event at Echuca last weekend.
On Saturday, Vesty defeated Ray Hanson (Lockington) and then Jamie Shields (Deniliquin). He played Mark Quor (Mathoura) in the semi-final on Sunday but lost 21-25 in a top game of bowls. Well done, Ashley.
A very successful afternoon three-bowl pairs tournament was held on Sunday with 28 pairs taking part. Two Rochester bowlers — Allan Benson and Gerard Browne — did not check the details as they turned up at 9am to start, went home, but then came back for a 12.30pm start.
Six pairs won their three games. Barry Williams/Fitzpatrick, Roy Jackson/Don Gillies, Bruce Major/Tim Quinlan, Rob Browne/Gerald Clayton, and the runners-up from City of Echuca were John Dinsdale/Lal Whyte plus 25 shots, and the winners were Peter Holzer/John Boyd plus 34 shots.
The consolation winners were Glen Saunders/Grant Baker from Heathcote. How lucky was John Boyd to have had the option of two great skippers.

THE Colbinabbin Bowls Club would like to thank local businessman Nick Ryan from Rochester Floors along with Jayden Weppner for the installation of artificial turf around the surrounds of the green. A very generous donation. The club also extends its thanks to Steve Hoare for his work on the signage of the new scoreboards at the back of the green and Ramon Rathjen and his team of workers for the work that has been done on the greens.
Members have said the green and surrounds look very good and they are receiving good comments from opposition when they travel to Colbinabbin.
It is wonderful to have people in the community who are willing to give up their time to help our club and we very much appreciate all contributions made.
Congratulations to Ramon Rathjen and Diane Chandler on winning their club championships — Ramon bringing his count to nine championships and Diane winning her second.
The mens semi-final saw Ramon Rathjen playing superb bowls to defeat Dean Wallace 25/4. In the other semi, Greg played consistent bowls to defeat John Vale 25/11.
On December 20 Ramon and Greg played for the Club Championship with Greg getting away to an early lead 7-2 after seven ends, then Ramon made a charge and on the 10th end he led 8-7. Greg then played some good bowls to wrestle the lead back and lead 15-10 on the 17th end but Ramon knuckled down and by the 19th end was back in front leading 16-15.
Ramon then took control and went on to win 25-17 on the 28th end.
In the ladies competition Marg Brown started off well in the semi-final against Rosie McIntosh, bowling well to lead 20-8 after 17 ends. Rosie then fought back to 18-21 after 21 ends but then Marg settled and went on to win 28-20 after 25 ends.
Diane Chandler took an early lead in the other semi against Christine Oliver leading 11-2 after 10 ends, then Chris made a steady charge to get back to 9-16 after 16 ends. At 25 ends Di led 23-15 but Chris kept coming and on the 29th end Di won 26-17.
On December 2 the final was played between Marg Brown and Diane Chandler with Di starting quickly to lead 13-8 after 10 ends, then Marg bowled well to make a comeback and after 16 ends Marg was 17-18 down then Di put down some good bowls to win 26-17 after 19 ends.
State singles: Greg Chandler decided to try his hand at the Victorian State Singles for the Goulburn Valley Region and so travelled to Mooroopna Bowls Club on Sunday, December 23 to take on the big guns.
His first opponent was Geoff Franze, a section one Skipper from East Shepparton, and when 24-17 down it appeared as though it may be all over. However Greg, playing some superb bowls, came back to win six ends in a row to win 25-24. Next Greg took on section one East Shepparton bowler Shane Mc Intosh and got away to an early start leading 10-2 until Shane started to get a roll on and it got back to 10-8, it was a tussle until Greg crept away during the last few ends to come away with a 25-20 win. Greg headed back to Mooroopna on January 6 to play a quarter final against Scott Adams — details were not to hand at this stage.
And a social note — obviously Greg hasn’t worked out how to operate a GPS as he had some difficulty finding his way to Christmas day lunch between Colbinabbin and Toolleen — but he did manage to find out where a few people lived out that way.
