A new play space was built on Coffey Dve, while the other two sites received upgrades in a bid to encourage active, happy lifestyles for some of the Mitchell Shire’s youngest residents.
The $300000 Connecting Wallan Neighbourhoods Project has been funded through a $225000 grant from the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund and a $75000 allocation from council.
As the population through Wallan continues to grow, the play spaces were a key priority of both Mitchell Shire and state government to incorporate outdoors play and foster social connections in new and growing residential areas.
Mitchell Shire Mayor Bill Chisholm said council was pleased to see the new play spaces open for residents in Wallan.
‘‘We are pleased to see the play spaces go into our communities as they are a brilliant setting for people to maintain healthy, active lifestyles,’’ he said.
‘‘They are more than just playgrounds. People are able to socialise with others while children learn how to adapt to different situations, boosting physical, social and problem-solving skills.
‘‘Thanks to the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund, we are able to deliver this important infrastructure in our growing communities and refresh ageing playgrounds in our established communities.’’
The design for each play space was finalised following community consultation in 2018.
Mitchell Shire Council reminds all residents to remain vigilant and safe while using public play spaces.
Adult supervision is always required, while any damage to the play spaces or dangerous wildlife sightings should be immediately reported.
