Time for teams to turn up

By Andrew Johnston

THE OPENING batch of one day games has wrapped up in the Goulburn Murray Cricket.

Clubs now look ahead to the first of three two-day games that will take the league most of the way to Christmas.

And as this period begins, Moama have another big task ahead this week.

They sit in third position on the GMC ladder and will be looking to solidify that position in the top four with another win.

To do that, they will have to knock off the reigning premiers.

A once unenviable task to take on the might of Fire Brigade, right now it seems less daunting.

Kyabram finds itself sitting outside the top four after back-to-back losses at the hands of Rochester and Cooma, and will be looking to use the first two day game of the season to make a major statement to the competition that this was not going to be the norm for the season.

Moama barely broke a sweat against Echuca South in round five following a strong win against Echuca the week before under lights at Vic Park.

A strong start for Moama to set up the win across the two day game will be a very clear statement that they are a top four side this season.

Across the river, Echuca have the difficult task of holding back the surprise packet of the 2018/19 season in BLU.

BLU have a new level of confidence this season with Luke Deeprose saying his team see themselves differently this year.

‘‘We have been a middle of the league team in the past and have probably played defensively to stay in that position,’’ he said.

‘‘We feel like we are a far better side this year. We have been attacking games, trying to get the wickets and win games that we feel we can and it’s having a massive impact on the season.’’

Echuca is in the top four, but have been harder to read than BLU.

Their talent has seen them win games, including against quality sides like Rochester, but losses to top place Tongala and local rival Moama raises questions about their form against top quality sides.

Echuca have the opportunity to make a statement with a victory, but BLU look the likely victor.

Rounding out the local clubs, Echuca South takes on Rochester at home.

Rochester should be the winners in this match as well.
