Troy, also known as Hungry, is a Roads and Maritime Services boating safety officer in Mildura while Rory is the senior boating safety officer in the mobile safety education compliance team based in Sydney.
According to Rory, it has been a special feeling to have his son by his side.
‘‘Although I am always very proud of Troy’s achievements, as one is of your children, having him firstly follow his love of the ocean and again follow his own path, and knowing what is required in both careers, it is a very nice feeling,’’ he said.
Troy joined Maritime in December 2017 after spending eight years in the Navy as a mine warfare specialist.
Coincidently Rory also did 10 years service in the Navy, and joined the then MSB/RMS in 1986.
The O’Haras only get to work together twice a year — one being the longest and most challenging ski race in the world, the Southern 80.
Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) licenses the 80 through an Aquatic Licence approved by roads and maritime services (RMS).
RMS also facilitates safe navigation on the Murray River in Echuca-Moama before, during and after the running of the event.
RMS also supported the 80 with boating safety officers (BSOs) strategically located along the race course as well as conducting roving compliance patrols after racing each day including joint RBT patrols with NSW police; attendance of management staff in the race control centre at the finish line liaising with race officials and maintaining radio communications with BSOs; attendance of management staff in the emergency operations and control centre Echuca police station; and presence of boating education officers (BEOs) at a Southern 80 stall.
