Sportstar March 2018 nominees

By Riverine Herald

Congratulations to shooter Kiara Dean and cricketers Matthew Hinks and Adam Nunn who are our March Sportstar nominees.

It’s hard enough to be at the top of your sport when you have been competing for your whole life. Imagine doing it in just over 12 months of competition. Kiara Dean is the March junior sports star nominee after claiming the number three ranking in down the line shooting, just over 12 months after making the transition from field and game shooting. Dean claimed the ranking at the recent World DTL Championships in Wagga Wagga.

It wasn’t the best season for Echuca Cricket Club, but Matthew Hinks was a standout player. The Echuca all-rounder had a fantastic season in GMC’s A grade competition. Dominating with the bat in the first half of the year, followed by with the ball in the back half of the season, Hinks finished with 285 runs and 28 wickets to be judged the joint A grade cricketer of the year. ‘‘There aren’t many guys more respected than Nunny, he’s an incredible player who we all have a great deal of admiration for.’’

Tongala would finish fourth in GMC cricket in 2017/18, with Adam Nunn playing a key role in guiding his side to the finals. The highly respected Tongala cricketer would share the A grade player of the year with Hinks, finishing the season with 357 runs and 17 wickets. Tongala made a late charge to the finals, knocking out Moama, in large part due to Nunn’s performance throughout the season.
