Sportstar nominees for June 2018

By Riverine Herald

Congratulations to hockey player Abbey Mathers and trainer Gwenda Johnstone who are 2018 Sportstar of the Year June nominees.

Earning selection to a representative team is always a major achievement.

But try getting selected to a senior sports side when you are only 16 years old.

That’s the case for Abbey Mathers.

The young gun of hockey found herself selected to the Victorian Country Women’s Hockey team.

Mathers was a dominant force at the recent Senior Country championships in Geelong, and found herself selected to the side for her efforts.

Gwenda Johnstone cannot stop winning.

The Echuca trainer recently claimed a big win, with her horse Rocket Tommy claiming a big win at Flemington.

The six year old gelding won the $100,000 Ken Cox Handicap over 1000m from Saxophone and Labuan Star.

Running with cover behind the early leader rider Jarrod Fry let Rocket Tommy go to use the huge Flemington straight to mow down the leader and hold off the challenges to win by half a length – at 11/1.

The win is Rocket Tommy’s second win at Flemington, and the stable has high hopes that it won’t be his last.

Rocket Tommy has now had eight overall wins.
