Congratulations to junior footballer Mackenzie Cowley and hockey player Ian Wright who are Sportstar of the Year nominees for August.
Mackenzie Cowley has had a stellar season of football this year, in any competition that he has been a part of.
Playing for his beloved Tongala Football Club in the Murray Football League under 17’s competition, at the incredible age of 14, Cowley was the league’s best and fairest player, pipping his closest rival by five votes.
This goes with representing the Bendigo Pioneers in the under 15’s V/Line cup, captaining the Victorian under 15 Indigenous side in the national carnival in Sydney, being selected to the under 15 All-Australian Indigenous side, a spot in Richmond’s Next Generation Academy, and being offered a sporting scholarship for Caulfield Grammar for 2019.
Ian Wright showed a golden touch to produce two winning goals in a hockey world cup final.
Wright’s two goals for Australia in the Grand Masters Hockey World Cup against England in Barcelona was enough for the green and gold to claim top spot on the podium.
The 75-year-old from Echuca not only helped win the world cup for his country, but finished the tournament as Australia’s top scorer.
Wright has represented Australia for many years since his first call-up around 2004, but said the Barcelona Masters had been a huge highlight of his career.
Wright is now headed for Lismore and Ballina in New South Wales to compete for Victoria in a national tournament.
If he plays well, Wright will be a good shout for another international call-up, this time destined for Vancouver, Canada in May 2019.
