Kids’ camp leaders needed

By Laura Briggs

Avis Weller from Girgarre is seeking leaders for a children’s holiday camp organisation.

Ms Weller, the camps’ organiser for the Shepparton district, said they were provided for all children from across Victoria, but particularly those who were disadvantaged.

She said the camps, which took place at Portsea, were organised four times each year for children aged nine to 12 and once a year for ages 13 to 16.

Ms Weller said the camps were provided at a low cost to provide disadvantaged children with an opportunity to attend and participate in recreational activities they might not have had the chance to do before.

‘‘Last year they had bubble soccer, stand-up paddle boarding and archery at the older kids’ camp,’’ she said.

Ms Weller said she had been a part of the camps for more than 40 years.

She said she had attended the camps as a child and continued on as a leader for a number of years following that.

She later sent along her two older daughters to attend the camps each year, but found when she inquired about sending her younger daughter five years later the camps were no longer offered because of a lack of children wanting to attend.

‘‘So I told them, if you do the paperwork, I’ll find the kids,’’ she said.

Forty years later, Ms Weller said she still loved being part of the camps — but for them to continue for children in the area, she needed leaders.

‘‘All they need is a Working with Children Check, which is free to get as a volunteer, and they need to be over 18,’’ she said.

Ms Weller said the next camp would be in October for children aged 13 to 16 years.

She said children would be transported by bus along with children from other districts, and the camps were open to all children within the age bracket.

She said if parents or guardians were not able to afford the camp cost, they were still encouraged to contact her.
