Men’s Shed a hive of activity

By Ashlea Witoslawski

A shed filled with the sound of friendly chatter, the buzz of power tools and the smell of delicious food is the perfect place to meet new friends and learn new skills.

On Ross St, behind the Tatura Racecourse, Tatura Men’s Shed is a hive of activity.

With more than 60 members, the year is beginning to ramp up again after a warm summer.

Tatura Men’s Shed member Vince Vincitorio said many of the men came along for the social aspect.

‘‘It’s a lot of fun and we have a lot of laughs,’’ Mr Vincitorio said.

Members have the opportunity to take on passion projects or try something new, including metal work, carpentry and vehicle restoration to name a few.

Well-known for their Tuesday lunches, club members enjoy a hearty meal cooked by members, as well as a wine or ginger beer brewed on site.

Members enjoyed Irish stew last Tuesday, cooked by Robert Knight.

‘‘We take turns to cook and we try different things and experiment,’’ Mr Knight said.

‘‘We’re quite proud of our lunches.’’

At a cost of $8, Mr Vincitorio said the funds were used to put on a special day with the company of the men’s partners and wives.

‘‘We had nearly 80 people last year,’’ he said.

Above all, the group prides itself on its support for one another, always making sure each member can reach out to someone in their time of need.

‘‘If somebody needs a hand we’re always there to lend it,’’ Mr Vincitorio said.
