But Echuca Regional Health could not run without them.
Here is the story of an ERH volunteer.
VIDEO: Bob Smith shares his story
IT’S the chore most of us ignore, but for Bob Smith, it’s his pride and joy.
As a volunteer fleet car cleaner for Echuca Regional Health, he’s on hand to make sure every vehicle is spick and span.
Because he believes if staff are enjoying driving the cars, they are giving a better service to the patients.
‘‘The hospital is such an important part of the community and ERH has a great reputation,’’ Bob said.
‘‘And if I can do something to help them deliver the services to the community, well, that's my reward.’’
Bob started cleaning the cars 12 months ago when the program was first established.
Before that, no-one had been cleaning the cars.
So with more than 300 vehicles cleaned by Bob and the team in the past year already, it’s no wonder staff are singing their praises.
‘‘It's rewarding because since I've started we get a lot of feedback and it's usually positive about how clean the cars are,’’ he said.Bob first got involved in the program when he heard about it from his neighbour, who volunteered on the ERH concierge desk.
And as they say, the rest is history.
He can now be regularly spotted around the ERH parking lots searching for the vehicles (some are easier to find than others) before taking them across town for a vacuum, wash and tyre pressure top-up.
While he hasn’t stumbled upon any precious gems in the cars to date, he’s found his fair share of coffee cups, empty water bottles, pens and paper bags.
And there’s no brushing it under the rug for Bob.
He is determined to leave cars spotless inside and out.
‘‘I like to make sure the inside smells nice,’’ he said.
‘‘Generally the cars come up really well and it's nice to bring them back and put them in the carpark so when staff use them, they are clean.’’
