With the opening day's play and first session on day two impacted, the match belatedly commenced just after midday on Thursday with the home side advancing to 1-81 at tea.
South Australia elected to bowl first but opener Bryce Street and No.3 Matt Renshaw defied the challenging conditions to ensure the visitors enjoyed little success.
A watchful Street is unbeaten on 37 after negotiating 115 balls while Renshaw is 26 not out.
Joe Burns was the only batsman dismissed in the 35-over session, with the former Test opener lbw to Liam Scott for 13.
Wednesday's opening day was called off following the torrential rain in Brisbane over the past week.
A minimum 72 overs will be bowled in the day with extended hours of play planned for the remaining two days.
But predicted storms and showers are likely to further interrupt play.
