Each year, the Winery Walkabout Weekend seems to go off without a hitch – the crowds come in and enjoy the festivities, wine and atmosphere not knowing the enormous amount of effort that has gone on behind the scenes.
At a recent club meeting, the Rutherglen Rotary Club recognised some of the groups that help to make the weekend the success it is.
This year the groups were the Rutherglen Scouts, St Marys Primary School, Rutherglen Primary School and Corowa Rutherglen United Hockey Club.
Each of these groups helped out with the food stalls at the Country Fair, and each group received $6000 for their efforts.
The Country Fair, organised by the Rutherglen Rotary Club,
has become an integral part of the Winery Walkabout Weekend and since 2002, has donated over $365,000 back to local community groups.
Country Fair Chair Colin Foster said he was delighted with this year’s results.
“That is the beauty of this event – all the money raised over the years have stayed within the community,” he said.
Mr Foster explained that each group commits to helping out for two years and over the last 16 years, 25 local groups have participated and benefited from the distribution of the funds.
“This weekend has developed into a key event of the Rutherglen tourist calendar, and the town will continue to benefit in the years to come.”
