Comedy legend’s Deni show

For four decades standup comedian Austen Tayshus, aka Sandy Gutman (pictured), has been using his original style of humour to entertain, agitate, and provoke, and now he’s coming to Deniliquin.

The 65 year-old has spent the past 40 years in the industry, performing in over 10,000 shows in nightclubs, universities, comedy clubs, pubs and theatres throughout Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA, Fiji and Bali.

The Australian comedy legend’s 36th Anniversary National Australiana Tour will land at the Deni RSL this Saturday night.

The tour marks 36 years since he released ‘Australiana’, with the spoken word comedic routine still holding the record as the highest selling single in Australian recording history.

When speaking with the Pastoral Times, Austen said his show is a ‘‘drama and theatrical piece’’ that involves the audience.

‘‘The show is about what’s going on in the world right now, so it’s always fresh and new,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s a 90 minute to two hour show that’s different to any comedy shows you see at comedy festivals.

‘‘It’s not politically correct, and it’s actually funny. I’ve always seen comedy as an artistic thing and have always been interested in the artistry of comedy.

‘‘I’ve been doing comedy for 40 years and have wanted to master the craft, so hopefully I can achieve that in another 40 years’ time.’’

The Austen Tayshus show kicks off at 8pm on Saturday, with doors opening at 7.30pm.

Tickets to see the 36th Anniversary National Australiana Tour are $20 at the club’s reception.
