The avenue of trees was floated several years ago but put on hold due to town water use restrictions, and was recently revived in the creation of the Deniliquin Masterplan.
Works to improve the south Deniliquin town entrance started last year when the Cobb Hwy Deniliquin sign was relocated to parkland adjacent Crispe and Faulkner Sts.
An irrigation system was installed at the same time to support new landscaping.
Edward River Council general manager Adam McSwain, who finished with council on Friday, said the idea was to ‘‘create a bit of a boulevard type effect’’.
‘‘Through the Federal Government drought funding received by council we have been able to continue upgrades of the Crispe St entrance and put in place two rows of trees along either side of the road,’’ he said.
‘‘Initially the trees will run from Lawson Syphon Rd to Sloane St, and we will continue along Crispe St in stage two later this year.
‘‘In stage two trees will be planted about a metre or so from the curb at the edge of the road. The road is wide so there will still be plenty of space for road users.
‘‘We have already received some positive feedback and we think these works will significantly help to beautify the entrance.
‘‘An inviting entrance will be important in attracting visitors after Corornavirus restrictions are reduced,’’ he said.
