The Deniliquin Rhinos Under 14s started their Murray Valley Cricket Association season in devastating fashion, scoring a dominant win over the Jerilderie/Berrigan Combine side at Deniliquin’s Memorial Park on Saturday.
After a strong showing on day one the previous week, where the Rhinos posted 5/201, Deni completed the task with ball in hand.
It took the hosts just 19 overs to secure the win, having the Combine side all out for 51.
Wicket takers from the innings were Angus Wright (2/2 off two overs), Charlie Bull (2/9 off three), Harry McIlwain (2/12 off three), Jack Murray (1/0 off one), Ryan Rotherham (1/4 off three), Noah Bradley (1/7 off three) and Hayden Doncon (1/9 off two).
The Rhinos made the decision to chase a two innings win, sending the Combine side back out to bat for a follow-on.
Jerilderie/Berrigan managed to fend off the two innings loss however, batting out the 20 overs to finish 4/62.
The second innings saw Jake Herberte (1/6 off three), Ryan Rotherham (1/7 off three) and Cooper King (1/2 off two) finish as wicket takers.
Under 14s coach Anthony Bradley said it was a solid performance, particularly due to the side missing two key players on day two.
“Lochie Holloway, who is our captain, is still out with a broken arm so he missed day one and two,’’ he said.
‘‘We also didn’t have Charlie Paton playing on day two after he dominated with the bat on day one.
‘‘They’re two of our best bowlers, so to get the job done without them is a good sign for what’s to come this year.
‘‘We’ve still got a talented line-up and should be up there again this year, along with the likes of Nathalia and Cobram.’’
