The galloper is part-owned by local plumber Todd Newman.
Marchello, trained by Shilleagh Meyervale, had a narrow win from Beaujeen, trained by Jerilderie’s Phil Sweeney.
It was a tight finish with the top three placings all finishing within a length of each other.
Marchello, ridden Bradley Vale, crossed the line first just 0.6 of a length in front of Beaujeen, ridden by Tyler Schiller.
Marchello part owner, Deniliquin’s Todd Newman, was delighted with the result. He said previous trainers had not rated the horse highly.
‘‘It was a beautiful day on Saturday. The local crowd made the atmosphere fun,’’ he said.
‘‘After Marchello finished second and third in previous years we were really hoping we could get on top of the podium this time.
‘‘I’m happy to say I’ve got the trophy sitting at home with me now; it’s a sight to see.
‘‘It’s extra special for Marchello who had some other owners pull out at the end of last year when it was recommended he should be retired.
‘‘We saw how healthy he was at the start of the year and knew he had some more races in him.
‘‘Meyervale and Vale, who are married, have done a brilliant job with Marchello and deserve a lot of the credit.’’
Newman has been a part of the racing scene for a long time, with his father Peter involved for 40 years.
He has had a share in Marchello from the start, and has been a part of his career every step of the way.
‘‘We’ve had Marchello since he was born,’’ he said.
‘‘He comes from good racing genes with his mother producing two other horses that have won races. She is in foal again now.
‘‘He (Marchello) ran again on Monday and finished forth, so for now we’re going to give him a couple weeks rest.
‘‘After that it will be up to Meyervale to decide if he enters in Gundagai’s carnival, with an eye on the 1800 metre event.’’
