Record crowd predicted

The biggest day on the Berrigan calendar is here, with thousands expected to flock to the Berrigan Racecourse for the 64th running of the Berrigan Cup on Saturday.Record crowds are expected at the event which attracts race-goers from all parts of the country.Race five on the six race card is the coveted Cup race, which this year worth $17,000 thanks to Baxter Transport and Pat Barrett’s Tyre Service.Berrigan Race Club secretary Carolyn Alexander said she’s excited for this Saturday’s action.‘‘We’ve had a great bookings this year for the marquees, both private and reserved.‘‘The reserved marquee has filled up which is an early indication of the numbers we’re expecting.‘‘Our other marquees have increased by 10 this year.‘‘It’s too early to tell with the fields, but I think they’ll be up to the usual standard.‘‘People should come along to have a really enjoyable, social day at a country race meeting.‘‘We have great facilities and services and a provide a friendly atmosphere.’’Prestige Catering will fill the dining room with the smell of delicious food, and there will also be a barbecue outside.Returning to entertain patrons again is local two-man band, Fake News, who will be playing throughout the day.The Gold Cup shares the day with Melbourne’s Victorian Derby, one of the most prestigious race days in the country.For the punters at Jerilderie, there will be on-site bookmakers as well as TAB facilities.‘‘I hope all patrons can have a happy and safe day,’’ Ms Alexander said.EFTPOS facilities will be available at the gate and bar for the first time.Gates open from 11am. Entry is $20 per adult and $10 for aged pensioners and children ages 16 and 17.
