US PGA Championship - Day Three Snapshot

By AAP Newswire

SNAPSHOT OF THE US PGA CHAMPIONSHIP THIRD ROUND

LEADERBOARD: Dustin Johnson (65) at nine under; Scottie Scheffler (65) and Cameron Champ (67) at eight under; Collin Morikawa (65), Paul Casey (68) and Brooks Koepka (69) at seven under; Jason Day (70), Justin Rose (70), Tommy Fleetwood (70, Daniel Berger (70), Tony Finau (67) and Bryson DeChambeau (66) at six under.

AUSTRALIANS: Day (70, six under); Adam Scott (70, two under); Cameron Smith (70, even par).

PLAYER OF THE ROUND: Johnson, who rattled off eight birdies. The former US Open winner bounced back from a double-bogey at the ninth with a four-under-par back nine to claim a one-shot lead.

SHOT OF THE ROUND: A bulked-up DeChambeau is usually known for his monster drives, but the American drained a 95-foot birdie putt at the par-4 18th.

STAT OF THE ROUND: Johnson's eight birdies are the most he has made during a round at a major since the final day at the 2015 US PGA Championship.

QUOTE OF THE ROUND: "I know he's going to be fine. I'm not just saying it because he's one of my best friends. All of us go through little spurts. For him, this has just been a tough one." - Justin Thomas on three-time major winner Jordan Spieth (73, 68, 76) who is at seven over and tied for last place of those who made the half-way cut.

TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: The cream rose to the top when big-hitting Johnson surged into the lead, but he is being chased by heavy hitters including Champ, young ace Morikawa, defending champion Koepka, DeChambeau and Finau. Day stalled but did enough to give himself a final-round chance at a second career major. Day's countrymen Scott and Smith are out of contention, as is Tiger Woods.
