The site showcases local towns, enchanting natural features, cultural experiences, must-see attractions and lists many amazing businesses in the area.
Murray River Council Mayor Chris Bilkey said with current travel restrictions it was all about the ‘stay-cation’ right now.
“The River Country website is a comprehensive guide to all the small towns in the Murray River Council area,” Cr Bilkey said.
On the website you can search through places to go, things to do and suggested drives; from Mathoura to Moama, Tooleybuc to Koraleigh.
Cr Bilkey said people were turning to Visit River Country — and were pleasantly surprised by what they found.
“There are a lot of people in Echuca-Moama who aren’t familiar with their neighbouring region, like Moulamein for example,” he said.
Moulamein is the Riverina’s oldest town and a popular camping spot thanks to its abundant fishing and river activities.
It’s biggest resident, the Big Tree, is the largest living red gum in Australia, believed to be more than 300 years old.
Another handy resource is Visit River Country’s food and wine section.
Filled with information about artisan farm-gate producers and cellar doors in the area, River Country provides contact details, pet-friendly advice, opening hours and online delivery information — all in one place.
You can discover boutique businesses such as Barham Vines, a small family-owned vineyard running an online cellar door at barhamvines.com.au
There’s also Bundarra Berkshires, which is selling free-range pork products online at , or you can pick up some small goods and charcuterie at its deli in the Barham township.bundarraberkshiresshop.com
You can even grab a few bottles of premium Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the banks of the Murray in Perricoota, while ordering a 10kg box of mixed organic beef cuts from Jungle Lane Beef Co.
Veggie lovers can get their avocado fix from Barham Avocados, and Quincy Jones Jelly has a range of jams and preserves made from natural and Australian produce.
Mofo Wines specialises in Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon and is also taking online orders.
For those looking for the outdoor experience, the Moama – Mathoura – Picnic Point touring route offers various riverside and forest tracks to walk, excellent fishing spots, a boat ramp, heritage walks and a bird hide.
Dog walkers will also be pleased to know they can take their pooch along the 5km Gulpa Creek walk in the Murray Valley Regional Park.
Or if you’re after a round of golf, play at Murray Downs or one of the region’s quality courses.
Another touring idea will see you head to Tooleybuc, a popular riverside location featuring beautiful parks and fabulous lunch stops.
The Tooleybuc area is highly rated as a kids’ playground and fisherman’s delight. It contains a nine-hole golf course, mini golf for the kids, the biggest stump in NSW and legendary burgers, courtesy of the Koraleigh General Store.
A day trip for those looking to get off the beaten track is to Campbell’s Island State Forest, which welcomes dogs, motorbikes and four-wheel-driving.
This state forest runs along the Murray and Little Murray Rivers north of Barham, with the best access via North Barham Rd.
So, jump online and rediscover your own backyard; there are so many opportunities to make memories in River Country.
