In fact, the Echuca CFA fire investigator saved a house from erupting in flames on Monday.
The man affectionately known as Pa was first on the scene to an airconditioning fire in Premier St about 3.30 pm.
“I walked in and I saw flames coming out of the airconditioner, so I went and got my fire extinguisher out of the car,” he said.
Echuca CFA captain Rob Amos said the occupant called 000 after his airconditioner started smoking.
“Pa lives around the corner and went directly there,” he said.
“The airconditioner got hot and started smoking and then turned into flames. So Pa grabbed his fire extinguisher out of the car and and did a fantastic job knocking the flames down.
“It was burning pretty hot inside and there was smoke everywhere. About 1.5 m was blackened on the roof.
“If Pa hadn't have got there it would have been a house fire.
“He is an amazing man and we're lucky to have him.”
A unit from Echuca CFA helped extinguish the fire.
“We were there for about 30 minutes and the biggest job would have been pulling the unit out of the wall. We then doused that with water,” Mr Amos said.
“The unit was pretty old and we believe something has happened with the electrics.”
Mr Amos said the occupant, who had a working smoke alarm, was not injured.
“He did all the right things. We advised him to call an electrician,” he said.
