Third car set on fire in Echuca

ARSONISTS are running amok in Echuca, with a third car set on fire in Echuca in five days.

A red Volkswagen Polo coupe parked outside a Hopwood St home was set alight just before 3am today.

Senior Constable Scott Newton of Echuca criminal investigation unit said police were pulling over a vehicle nearby when they saw the car on fire in the front yard.

“Offenders are believed to have been running south on Hopwood St towards Ogilvie Ave,” he said.

“The owner of the vehicle wasn’t home at the time but turned up later.”

Two Echuca CFA appliances attended and put out the fire in about 15 minutes.

“The car was completely destroyed,” SC Newton said.

Firefighters put out the fire quickly.

“It looks like it was ignited at both ends.

“An Engel fridge in the boot and some personal property were also destroyed.”

SC Newton said it was still too early to tell if the blaze was related to two car fires in Echuca last week.

A Mazda CX9 was stolen and burnt out in Stewart's Bridge Rd on Friday while a Nissan Navara ute was set alight in Murrumbidgee Drive early Thursday.

“An arson chemist will investigate the exact ignition points and see if there are any similarities,” he said.

“They could possibly be linked but I can’t comment on that unless the evidence supports it.”

Police are reviewing CCTV footage and are appealing to the public for help.
