A TEENAGE boy is in a critical condition after a horrific motorbike accident near Echuca on Sunday.

The 16-year-old was riding a dirt bike with another boy on the back when he lost control and hit a tree in Pianta Rd Wharparilla about 12.30pm.

The Echuca teen suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to The Alfred hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The other 16-year-old boy, believed to be a relative, suffered two broken legs and is in a stable condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Moama's Robyn Graham was one of the first on scene after being flagged down by the father of the boys.

“We were heading down to see my daughter who was camping along the river when we saw this man on a motorbike waving and yelling for us to stop,” the former psychiatric nurse said.

“He was hysterical and wanting us to help the boys,"

“It was just a horrific, horrible scene. The rider was unconscious the whole time and looked really bad.

“I could only feel a faint pulse on him. The other one was very vocal to start with and then he went silent.

“I called my daughter Sarah who is a nurse to come as I thought she could help but there wasn't anything she could do.”

Emergency services arrive at the scene.

Robyn's husband Steve, who is trained in mine rescue, called the ambulance and told them to send a helicopter and as much help as possible due to the seriousness of the accident.

“Sarah and I just sat with the boys for what seemed like ages, until the ambulances arrived. We just kept telling them they were going to be okay.

“I really hope they pull through."

Sergeant Paul Nicoll of Campaspe Highway Patrol said police were investigating the crash.

He said the boys were wearing helmets at the time.

“They will be suffering significant injuries because it was a big impact,” he said.

“The damage to the bike hitting the tree was significant."
