To better link towns across the state and encourage more visitors to north-west Victoria, the government is investing $664,000 to build five new charging stations in rural centres, as well as smaller rural towns and key tourist sites.
Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp welcomed the announcement.
“The increased uptake of electric vehicles has clear benefits for local communities, and building these stations will create local jobs and deliver an important economic boost for Victoria’s north-west,” he said.
“Building charging stations in regional areas will boost tourism, reduce carbon emissions and help us build a cleaner, more sustainable future.”
The funding is part of the government’s $2.7 billion building works package to create 3700 jobs while supporting thousands more across the state’s supply chains and pump extra dollars back into the economy.
The new sites were identified as priority locations in the Charging the Regions report undertaken by the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance and local governments.
Constructing charging stations and increasing the number of electric vehicles are key steps in realising Loddon Mallee’s renewable energy roadmap, which outlines the community’s ambition to embrace new energy technologies across the region.
The Victorian Government is developing a zero emissions vehicle roadmap, to be released later this year. It will provide a roadmap for transitioning to zero emissions vehicles and supports the goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
