The current 2.5km zone will now be extended to a 50km radius for border residents permitted to enter NSW with a permit, with an exemption of 100km for agriculture workers.
Border zone residents are eligible for a permit if they are entering NSW for work, education, medical care/supplies, or to provide/receive care to/as a vulnerable person.
NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the changes would allow border towns to "work, play and actually function as a community".
“I understand the uniqueness, the anomalies, that often in normal circumstances make it difficult to live in these communities. you put a layer of COVID over the top of this community and restrictions, it really makes it difficult.
"We are also going to work towards allowing the ag workforce to travel back and forth across the border within that 100km zone and look at ways for exemptions to allow that to increase.”
