A NSW Police Force spokesperson said police, in consultation with Transport for NSW, VicRoads and local council, had implemented several enhancements around traffic management plans in the area.
“These plans do not include moving the border checkpoint,” he said.
“Police will continue to work with stakeholders to ensure the best outcomes for communities on both sides of the border.”
On the Victorian side of the border, the Department of Transport is also implementing traffic management plans to communicate access changes, prioritise freight movements and reduce queuing at checkpoints.
“Extra traffic management is in place at Echuca to ensure the safe and smooth flow of traffic and freight near this important border crossing point,” Department of Transport northern director Brian Westley said.
While the border zone was extended on October 1, travel to these areas is only permitted for border region resident permit holders.
NSW residents are being reminded anyone who travels to Victoria, including within the ‘border bubble’, will require a valid permit to re-enter NSW.
Operation Border Closure Forward Commander Superintendent Paul Smith said police would continue to enforce border closures.
“We have had several reports of people attempting to travel from South Australia to NSW — and vice versa — via the Sturt Hwy in Victoria, as this is the most direct route,” Supt Smith said.
“Anyone wishing to enter NSW from South Australia will need to do so directly, via an alternative route.
“If you attempt to travel into NSW via Victoria and do not have a valid permit, you will be turned around at the border checkpoint and refused entry to NSW.”
