An Echuca woman was called on Thursday afternoon by someone claiming to work for the organisation, and said the caller was incredibly persistent and convincing.
“I was told my landline phone was going to be cut off due to problems with the NBN service,” she said.
“I was told they would send a technician to improve our service but instead of the $95 service call, it would cost me $4.45 to book the appointment.
“He was very persistent, and I asked him how I could know he wasn't a scam. He gave me a phone number I could ring, as well as the name and details of a technician.”
The number provided appears with six complaints on the website Reverse Australia, all giving a similar story.
“They wanted me to pay by giving my credit details, or by doing it online. It felt dodgy from the second they rang us,” the woman said.
NBN Co's website states it will "... not call you to offer technical support, rectify speed issues, or to advise your NBN connection has been ‘hacked’ or is not secure".
NBN is also a wholesale agency, and rarely accepts direct payments from the public.
The resident said she wanted people to know, particularly the vulnerable.
“He was quite convincing, he knew our names and was able to tell us where we lived, what our number was, and gave us the details of the technician,” she said.
“This went on for about 20 minutes, and I worry that someone will think it's legitimate and fall for it, so I wanted people to be aware they may get a call from this number and not to trust it.”
