ERH’s current cancer and dialysis service is run in an outdated, repurposed aged care facility.
“It’s become evident over time with people living longer and the higher incidence of cancer in older people that we’re not able to meet the demand in our current services,” ERH nurse unit manager Lyn Jeffreson said.
“We know our catchment has a higher than average incidence of cancer and cancer-related deaths.
“The hospital realised we needed a centre able to cater for larger numbers of patient treatments and also in a better, purpose-built centre.”
The $8.3 million facility has already received $7 million from the Victorian and NSW governments, and now ERH is hoping to raise the remaining funding with the help of the community.
Ms Jeffreson said one of the major benefits was all cancer-related services would be located in the same building.
“The design of the centre will enable more people to access treatment close to home and improve access to highly trained cancer and dialysis health professionals,” she said.
“Local people will benefit from cancer care that goes beyond treatment alone.
“Co-located specialist consulting rooms, purpose-built treatment areas, specialist nursing staff, pharmacy and allied health staff will provide a more holistic, patient-centred approach to care.”
She said the aim was to create a warm, welcoming and supportive environment.
“The new building will be beautiful,” she said.
“The centre will be light and bright, have a less clinical feel with the use of a calming natural colour scheme and will have extensive views to landscaped garden areas through large windows in the treatment and wellness spaces.”
The launch will take place virtually via Zoom at 4pm on Wednesday, November 25. Log on to find out more about the planning process and project outline, see concept designs and hear how the community can get support the centre.
