In a brief statement his club said: “Port Adelaide midfielder Ollie Wines suffered a shoulder injury while water skiing near Mannum on Saturday afternoon.
“Wines will have his shoulder scanned later this week to determine the extent of injury.
“The club will make no further comment until it has received the results of the scans.”
However, Port legend and former teammate Kane Cornes has painted a much more serious picture on Twitter.
Cornes, who is also on radio in Adelaide, said Wines “has suffered significant shoulder injury” and promised more details tomorrow.
Wines has already had major shoulder concerns, sitting out the latter part of the 2015 season after an on-field collision required reconstructive surgery on his left shoulder.
He spent about six weeks with his left arm in a sling before getting the chance to resume light running before pre-season.
Wines had attempted to return to the field after the injury in round 18.
However, Power coach Ken Hinkley was not willing to risk further damage to one of his star players.
At the time Port’s high performance chief Darren Burgess informed the club website that it was generally up to a three-month journey back towards contact-level training.
‘‘Players have played with them (ongoing shoulder injuries) in the past, but given his age, the combative nature of his game style and our no-risk policy in situations like this — the need to put his health and wellbeing first — it was probably an easy decision to make in the end,’’ Burgess said.
Port has not specified which shoulder has been injured but the former Echuca footballer will be devastated if it is the same one as he dislocated in 2015.
