Tributes have flowed for Mr Williams since his family shared the news on social media on Sunday afternoon.
Many noted the legacy he leaves behind, of contributions made to the Echuca-Moama community, the local live music scene, and the ongoing Winter Blues Festival.
In the announcement, Mr Williams’ family said he was a loving father, partner and friend, always putting others before himself.
“He was actively involved in the local community, giving so much and expecting nothing in return. He will be sadly missed,” the family wrote.
Former Echuca-Moama Tourism chief executive officer Kathryn Mackenzie led the tributes.
“Deepest sympathy to all Peter’s family and friends. Peter was wonderful to work with had a quirky sense of humour and just made things happen. He has left a wonderful legacy of music, great friendship and a much loved festival. RIP,” Ms Mackenzie said.
Winter Blues Festival programmer Jon Howell spoke of the indelible legacy he left on the annual event.
“Vale Peter Williams. I will always remember Peter as the man behind the Winter Blues Festival — an event that he started 23 years ago to answer the question ”How does our community beat the economic slump in July ‘The Winter Blues’?,” Mr Howell said.
"Since that first simple one-day blues concert all those years ago, the Winter Blues Festival has grown to be one of the few truly iconic blues music events in Australia.
“For blues artists, and particularly Victorian blues artists, the Winter Blues Festival is one of the highlights of the touring calendar — a chance to connect with peers, sit in on each other’s gigs, and connect with a core audience who are there for the music.
“The quality of music and that spirit of camaraderie have snowballed over the years — and the festival consistently draws huge audiences to Echuca-Moama over the last weekend in July.
“I've had the pleasure of working with Peter on the festival for the past year and his love for the local community, drive and enthusiasm, and his jovial nature (while also not taking any crap from anyone) makes me proud to have worked under his leadership.
“Peter Williams leaves us as one of the completely unsung heroes of the Australian live music industry, a position I’m sure he never sought out. He will be sorely missed.”
Born and raised at Lockington, Mr Williams ran the Tangled Garden bookshop in Echuca for 32 years.
He served four terms as Campaspe Shire Mayor.
Mr Williams served on a number of boards and played a key role behind the scenes of many volunteer organisations around the twin towns over the years.
