Victoria Police’s Operation Roadwise started on Friday and continues through the Christmas holiday period, with police out patrolling to ensure drivers are doing the right thing and keeping others safe.
“It’s a little bit disappointing that the public is disregarding the road safety message during the holiday season when traffic is fairly heavy,” Campaspe Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Corey Holland said.
“We hope people would drive more responsibly and give a bit more thought to their fellow motorists.”
About 8am on Saturday, police intercepted a drink driver in High St, Echuca, and a 40-year-old male was issued with a penalty notice which resulted in a loss of licence.
Acting Sgt Holland asked people to consider the lasting influence of drinking alcohol the night before driving.
“If you’re going to have a drink that night, remember it might take you a little while to recover the next day,” he said.
Shortly after dealing with the drink driver, police observed a motorcycle in High St not displaying number plates.
The driver was intercepted and a 32-year-old was processed for allegedly drug driving, unlicensed driving and driving an unregistered vehicle — resulting in the motorcycle being impounded.
On Sunday, about 1.20pm, police followed up a complaint from a member of the public about a speeding vehicle on the Murray Valley Hwy near Torrumbarry.
A 32-year-old Cohuna male was picked up for speeding — allegedly detected at 136km/hr in a 100km/hr zone — drug driving and failing to display P plates.
In the Port area of High St, six mobile phone offences were detected for a range of reasons — texting, using GPS, or talking on the phone.
Other offences during the weekend included failure to display P plates, a probationary driver behind the wheel of a prohibited vehicle and a vehicle defect notice.
