“Generally from a public order point of view, we were very pleased with the crowd behaviour at both the finish line and around the Echuca CBD,” Campaspe police Inspector Dave Bowler said.
“We didn’t have any fatalities or any serious collisions that caused injury.
“We also had our mobile police station posted out on the intersection of High and Heygarth streets over the Friday and Saturday nights, in an effort to increase public safety and we were delighted with the overall result, particularly after hours.”
Inspector Paul Huggett of the Murray River Police District agreed the weekend was largely successful and safe.
“As far as policing over the Southern 80 weekend, the crowds were overwhelmingly good,” he said.
“We had the police boat out, we had police from out of town and we had highway patrol operations but there were no significant traffic issues or policing incidents, aside from the incident in Moama when the police officer was dragged.”
Campaspe police will have their mobile police station posted in the McDonald’s car park on May 20 and 21 for the night shift.
“This is a great opportunity for members of the public to come down and speak to the police about their perceptions of community safety. We will welcome any ideas from the community about what we can do to make them feel safe,” Insp Bowler said.
