With the help of the Bush Nursing Centre, students sent handwritten letters to elderly members of the community who may be struggling through COVID-19.
“At Lockington Consolidated School one of our core values is community, and as a school we wondered how we could embrace this in times of remote learning,” Lockington Consolidated School admin assistant Deanne McNair said.
“We came up with this idea and after approaching our local Bush Nursing Centre they canvassed interest among our local elderly community members and did a whole lot of groundwork for us, which we are grateful for, and thank them for their time.”
While the students were stuck at home, they realised there would be other people in the community in the same situation.
“With so many people feeling the strain of social isolation at the moment, we were glad to be able to alleviate some of the loneliness and brighten someone’s day,” Ms McNair said.
“We looked at this as a great opportunity to rally around our community and take a little time to make somebody feel special.”
So the students got to work and sent their letters, which received a great response from the recipients.
“The response from the community was amazing, with many of the students receiving letters in return in the mail, which is exciting, as it is not what our students are used to,” Ms McNair said.
“It was great to bring back a bit of old-fashioned letter writing.
“For such a simple initiative, it certainly derived a lot of pleasure for many.”
