With his teammates struggling to get the scoreboard ticking over, Williams adopted an aggressive mindset and made 82 off 89 balls.
Although the fifth wicket to fall, the skipper's performance helped his side reach 192 before they were all out after just 56.1 overs in the Goulburn Murray Cricket clash.
And like any other captain, he was left wanting more.
“It's always nice to put together a decent score, but I wish I could have gone on and made a ton,” Williams said.
“I think if we had have batted out our 80 overs, then we could have quite comfortably made 250.
“Saturday was just one of those days where we couldn't get a few guys set and have them stay in for an extended period of time.
“But it's something we will definitely work on in the coming weeks.”
Rochester was able to respond with ball in hand, limiting Cooma to just 1-42 from 20 overs before stumps.
Williams said a similar performance would be required for his side to win tomorrow.
“Early wickets on day two are going to be the key to our chances,” he said.
“If the pitch is in similar condition to Saturday's in terms of it being up and down, we will want to bowl into the wicket a bit more.
“We would have liked to get more runs on the board, but we've certainly got something to bowl at.
“I'm confident our bowlers will be able to deliver for us.”
Play will resume from 12.30pm at Cooma Recreation Reserve.
